Rubbish collection

Rubbish collection is considered an essential service and will be running to the normal schedule during COVID-19 Alert Level 2. Please put bags out early and double-bag tissues or other potentially hazardous items.

Information about collection days and routes can be found by following the link below.

A weekly kerb side collection for households is provided throughout the district. Recycling facilities are also at all transfer stations (rubbish and recycling stations) and the Re:Sort Centre.

Blue bins for glass

Blue bins for glass bottle and jar recycling have recently been delivered to Whangarei Households. The blue bins go out the same day as rubbish bags and red bins.

Waste Minimisation

Reducing your household waste is not only better for the environment but will reduce the amount you pay for rubbish disposal.

Follow the link below for further information.

Rubbish disposal

Rubbish, recycling and garden waste can be taken to the main Re-sort centre in Whangarei or to the seven rubbish and recycling stations located throughout the district.

Transfer stations are open during COVID-19 Alert Level 1 and 2.

Follow the link below for more information.

Fly tipping

If you find any illegally dumped rubbish please report it to us so we can investigate and remove it.

Abandoned vehicles

Information about abandoned vehicles can be found by following the link below.

Please call us to report a vehicle which you think has been abandoned. To enable a quick response please have as much information as possible, such as:

  • an accurate description of the location
  • make, model and colour of the vehicle
  • registration plate number
  • if there is a current Warrant of Fitness and a registration sticker on the screen.

If there are registration plates or a registration sticker on the vehicle and it is positioned in a safe location, there may be a time delay in getting it removed as the legal owner will need to be contacted before it is removed.

If the vehicle is dangerously positioned or has no registration plates or registration sticker in the window or is a burnt out wreck, it may be able to be removed more quickly.

Litter collection

Litter bins are provided throughout the district. These bins are for visitors to use and are emptied daily where possible.

Please do not put household rubbish in or next to them.

The landfill at Pohe Island is closed and no longer accepts any rubbish or clean fill.

Follow the link below for further information.

Puwera landfill was opened in November 2010 and accepts all refuse collected within the district.

There is no public access and only bulk haul vehicles for domestic and commercial non-hazardous refuse are allowed entry.

Rubbish disposal services are provided for the general public at Re:Sort or the rubbish and recycling stations located throughout the district.
