Accessibility Policy

In late 2014, Council adopted an accessibility policy to ensure equity and access for people with disabilities are a priority in the work it does.

Disability access

There are a number of carparks, public toilets and other facilities in Whangarei with disability access. Follow the link below to view a map of these facilities and services.

Mobility scooter and wheelchair hire

Two wheelchairs and a mobility scooter (affectionately called Buttercup) are available for people with limited mobililty to borrow when visiting the Town Basin and places nearby. They are located at The Hub and are free to use. You can call ahead to check availabilty on 09 430 1188 or inquire as you are passing.

These items were kindly donated to the district by NorthAble Equipment Plus and Tiaho Trust.

Parking and Transport

Disability Working Parking Permit

Council provides disabled working parking permits for eligible individuals whose place of employment does not have all day free parking options in the immediate vicinity.

Download and save a copy to your computer first. You can then either:

  • print it, complete it by hand and send or deliver it to us; or
  • fill it out on your computer and save it before attaching it to an email to us.

Mobility Parking

A Mobility Parking Permit is a card issued by New Zealand CCS Disability Action which entitles the holder to park in a designated mobility parking space.

Total Mobility Scheme

This scheme offers people with impairments a 50% discount on taxi fares for transport in the Whangarei urban area.
